The Birdsville Races is the most iconic ‘bush’ race meeting in Australia. The first race meeting took place in 1882, and with the exception of a period during WW11, has only been cancelled once (2007, due to an outbreak of equine influenza in Qld & NSW). During the races Birdsville’s population explodes from 100 to 6000 and there’s a wonderful festival atmosphere in town. The two-day race meeting is famous for its colourful ‘fashions’, lots of good-natured revelry, and the running of the legendary Birdsville Cup.
